Signs of the Times

Again the blog is all out of order but whatever. From Lancelin we came through Cervantes and Jurien Bay, spent the night at beautiful Sandy Cape campground, with a detour en route to the famous Wedge Island shack community.

Something I notice about WA is they are very keen on signs. Apparently the local & visiting population go berserk at any opportunity, because there are signs everywhere you look telling you not to do things that would never occur to you until you read them on a sign. "No Camping - Offenders Will Be Hanged As Per Town Bylaw No. 28,753" and "Unregistered Vehicles or Drivers Will Be Confiscated and Cast Into the Sea" type signs everywhere, even in unlikely places such as behind the liquor store.

Each of these signs has more signs nailed above, below and around it with fine print detailing various additional rules, corporal punishments and heavily worded excerpts from local bylaws, with "Have a Great Visit!" cheerfully scribbled below. In most places you don't even need to bring a holiday book, you can spend hours just reading all the signs. Presumably without all these signs people would just run amok, looting and burning everything in sight before hammering tent pegs into the car park in front of the grocery store for the night.

We stop at Sandy Cape for the night, a lovely spot (allow 2 hours to read signs at entry point) where we are sheltered from the howling gales & rain and go for a walk on the amazing sand dunes (see Smokey's expedition entries). The dolphins who normally frolic in the bay have all nicked off to Central Australia.
