Jesus where does the time go??? Went over to Tony and Pat's (Gary's boss) to help clean out their guttering, dug up the front yard, collected some cactus & succulent cuttings, scoffed down lunch, fell asleep in front of the giant toxic plasma TV, dug up more of the yard, took some grass patches up to Barry for his barren yard, tried to sort out how many dozens of fire training courses we're signed up for this month, worked on articles for the Dust, then stood in front of the fridge in a bleary blank state until I realised that what I really wanted was to brush my teeth.
On the way home yesterday we saw six emus run across Main Street just a hundred metres or so from my house! Apparently they sometimes wander across the main road right in town. How cool is that? Just don't stop if they start waving you down & asking for cigarettes or grog.
While we working, Pat came out and said that we were "a very nice young couple", which nearly made Gary fall off the roof (we're always complaining about our middle-aged aches & pains). "You seem well suited to each other!" added Pat. Gary agreed and proudly told her about all the things I've been making at my place. Tony and Pat own the Peak Hill homestead and have lots of stories to tell about Meeka. Tony is recovering from a stroke and when he's a bit better they're going to have me over so I can glean some details for my Peak Hill Junior Reporter essay.
Lots of drunk people staggering past the house this weekend, all offering to help me with the digging. "You've got a nice figure miss!" added one old fellow. Fortunately my hand-made fence is standing up well to the daily drunken clinging. Occasionally someone gets a bit tangled up from trying to support themselves as they weave along the fenceline and I have to go and unravel them.
Oh lordy still have to go and make dinner, then Gary's sandwiches, feed the chooks, do some washing, check the stock market & get the dog hair off my work uniform. What sewage surprises await me at the hostel this week?
