Flinders Ranges 1

Saturday 16th April. Leave Adelaide with K., who has requested the blog nom de plume of "The Old Fossil" (O.F.). First stop: Port Wakefield, which has nothing to recommend it so I won't mention it here. On to Port Augusta, where town planners thoughtfully greet arrivals with a scenic bridge over a sewage treatment pond called "Lake Knockout" (roll your windows up, that smell ain't the dog).

Arrive at beautiful Warren Gorge as dusk falls, discover Sooty hiding in the blankets, and a family with approximately 27 toddlers arrives next to us. Three hours later they are still wrestling with the tent in the headlights of their car, providing us with much entertainment. The toddlers are sent into the bushes to collect firewood and snakebites. By midnight the family are esconced in their tent and the crying and screaming begins. "Guess there's bugger all chance of seeing any animals now," mutters the dad.

We go for a night walk & O.F. teaches me amazing constellation facts, which I am able to remember for about three minutes. There's probably an iphone app for it anyway. In the morning we go for a walk but it's clear from the number of trail bikes, children, football radio and generators that any yellow-footed rock wallabies are at least 3000 km away by now. We hit the road, the fossils are calling.

Warren Gorge Campground

We did not see any of these
