Extreme Golf

The Meekatharra Golf Club 2012 season kicked off today with five teams wandering about the desolate reaches of the desert course, handicapped by cold beers, snakes and flies. Gary teed off into some thick snake-infested bushes and spent the first half hour of his game looking for the ball. Lauren, Chris's daughter, was the caddy, driving a quad bike with the all-important drinks esky. Guy Bell, the famous retired spitfire pilot and one of my meals on wheels clients was in fine form, riding his tiny little motorcycle which the fellows had made up for him with a rack for his clubs.

Despite the heat, flies, dust, miles of barren fairways and hours and hours of drinking in the baking sun, I turned down the tempting invitation to stay and once I had my photos it was time to take the dogs for a ramble. The local pool was open, so I treated myself to a lovely swim in the cold water - what a feeling! A quick trip to the tip, set the police on to one of the kids chucking rocks at the fence, a bit of lunch and it's a typical Sunday afternoon in Meeka. Gary should be home in few hours, drunk, sunburned and possibly bitten by snakes.
