Gary came home all excited. "I've inherited a caravan! For free!" We spent about five minutes going "Awesome!" and "Fully awesome!" at each other. It's one of the old mine camp caravans, sounds like it could be a bit of a retro vintage gem, but with bachelor hell decor inside. But it has off-road wheels! Sadly, even with the temptation of a free air conditioner, Gary won't let me paint it. Not that I have time with my 762 other projects anyhow.
So that led to getting out the maps again. Gary reckons he can borrow the tough as old boots 4WD ute from work, so he got out the really remote area map sections between Meeka and the coast. In the end we decided to abandon everything except the ute - why drag a caravan around? We have swags n bags, and it will be just as cheap to go clean up at a dodgy caravan park or roadhouse if/when we need a shower.
I am so excited - Gary's worked out that we can take the Peak Hill track almost all the way to Tom Price (a mining town near Karijini National Park), about 500 km of your true-blue no-one-in-a-hundred-kms isolated wild outback, checking out places like Fish Holes and other pools and gorges which would put some of the tourist photo spots in Karijini to shame - it will be incredible.
So the idea is to take tracks pretty much all the way to Karratha, then zip over to Dampier and the Dampier Archipelago & go snorkelling and look at the petroglyphs at Burrup Peninsula, then wander around until we feel like coming back to Meeka. We're planning to head off in mid May, so hopefully that means the giant deadly stinging horror jellyfish which are bigger than a car will have gone back to their Japanese giant monster movie set where they come from.
