Rain!

Thunderstorms are hitting us here in Meeka and it's a chilly 24 degrees (had to turn the heater on). After a busy morning doing boring conveyancing paperwork & getting a post office box etc I snuggled back into bed to sleep for about a week. The distant thunder had Honey shaking & burrowing under the covers, joined shortly afterward by Atlas as the storm went overhead. The bed nearly caved in. We've given up any hope of him being a guard dog.

Slowly getting to know the town. The post office dog is Bindy, who pops her head up behind the counter when you go in but is too short to hand you the EFT machine or weigh parcels, so Russell does it. There's an outdoor cinema (abandoned), a cafe (derelict) and 3 pubs (always busy). Right behind my house is a quartz outcrop, so we are looking forward to finding giant gold nuggets in the back yard.

The population is 1400 people and about 27,000 dogs. Medical specialists like dentists etc visit about once a month so one of my jobs is to organise appointments in advance. I don't want to know what a mobile dental clinic consists of ("just bite down on this stick"). There's a tiny community centre where you can do banking for a couple of hours in the mornings, take driver licence tests once a month, and other services like internet & computer courses; it's really good. The busiest place in town is the police station.

Meeka is the Royal Flying Doctor Base for the midwest region, so we have a hospital. It is mainly staffed by mental health professionals (yep, lookin' forward to that hot weather...) Most of the town consists of industrial lots for various machinery, mine offices, freight services, council building supplies and emergency supplies of spare dogs.

When the river running down our street in front of our unit has subsided I will go out and take photos.
