At first glimpse the town looks charming, but you soon realise most of the shops are abandoned. Through the dusty windows you glimpse the occasional skeleton of a shopkeeper. We arrive at the garage, greeted by mechanic Wayne, who has an angle grinder safety cover made of an old Arnott's biscuit tin. Smokey is quite taken with the garage and is soon esconced on the Ryco filters product shelf. Honey gets stuffed with snacks by Catherine, the shop manager, and is a big hit with the Aboriginal kids.
Half the town drops by the garage to chat - Elise, who rescues the town cats & dogs and makes very funny "tours of Norseman" clips for YouTube; Lois (Catherine's mum) who settles down for no reason in the office, and Sean, a nomadic motorhomer and the town's beekeeper, who offers me a spare paddock for the night. Again, people are terrific - Wayne offers me the use of the "troopy" 4WD, Catherine draws me a map, and everyone who passes by is invited to come and look at Smokey on the product shelf.
