Bush Fixes

Harvey at the pub last night told me how to solve my constant bike tyre punctures: you let the air out of your innertube, then get some full cream milk, remove the valve, fill the innertubes with the milk and put the valve back on. Then you ride around or spin the wheels for a while to churn the milk up, and after a couple of days the milk goes hard inside the tube, so that even if you get a puncture you aren't riding on a flat tyre. This is what the horse trotting race people do with their buggies in the outback!

The other two options are cutting open an old set of tubes and using them to line the inside of the tyres, then putting a new set inside those and filling them with milk or prickle compound (bogging foam), or to do what the aboriginal kids do: take the tyres off and just ride around on the rims. The noise is indescribable.

If your vehicle gets stuck, you call Gary and he goes out to the stockyards to get one of the many gigantic big-ass graders, trucks, bulldozers or crane trucks and pulls/drags/pushes you out. Right now he is out helping some poor Somali truck driver called Funghi (?) who's somehow got his road train half bogged just out of town. They're a bit shorthanded, so Gary said I might be the one to drive the grader out. Hope the cops are looking the other way!

Monsoonal rain all night and still going today - mud, mud, mud. The creek is slowly rising...
