Today's Gazza Tours featured a trip to the Meekatharra Golf Course - 18 holes, very serious, just fantastic. Various businesses sponsor each tee; the tees are tiny green fake grass with a few tin chairs next to them. When a tournament is on, they put eskies of cold drinks at every other tee. Old Guy Bell, the ancient spitfire pilot, uses a motorcycle with a sidecar as his golf buggy. As with most community things in Meeka, people just pop out when they feel like it and do whatever work needs doing, or they just add their own improvements - can you imagine anyone doing this in a city park? It's just great.
The golf course is basically the outback with tees and flags lurking among the rambling tracks and bush. Old sump oil is used to pad down the hole areas, so they look like weird alien landing circles.
From there we went to the oldest diggings in Meeka, where the Chinese prospectors dug out a rambling horizontal gully & shaft (now filled in for safety, unfortunately). Abandoned ancient mining equipment dots the landscape. The pale coloured tailings contain cyanide - highly poisonous, you can't take it for gardening or let it get near water.
I never get tired of the sky and the landscape. It's so hot, but it's just so beautiful. Every time you go for a ramble you find all these fascinating little things like gemstone rocks, remnants of pioneer days, snake and animal tracks. It's starting to feel like home.
