Peace & Quiet & Big Tin Things

A typical Meeka day - helping out at Paddy's, checking on the stockyard dog, fixing a mate's quad bike, looking at shed kit prices in last week's paper, then sitting in front of the big screen telly at the veteran's mess hall to watch the weather & wheat reports:

G:   Well, wheat's down.
C:   Barley's up again.
A:   It was down last week.
G:   Should come up again.

Overstimulated by all this excitement it was time to head back home to eat dinner on the verandah with the chooks. They are now roosting on top of some upside down buckets next to the door, and walk around our feet quite happily. They're just lovely to have around. Silly Boy is trying to dig his way under the house to get at them; it sounds like a warthog snorting and scrabbling and howling to itself under the floorboards.

Gary is so patient and gentle with all the animals, even when they're driving us up the wall with all their heffalumping and squawking & chaos - he talks to them the same way I do, like they're people (unruly people who've perhaps had one drink too many and are forgetting their manners). He is a very kind and gentle bloke, but not averse to marching out the front door in the middle of the night with the golf club, ready to sort out any trespassers. I have made the supreme gesture of love and acceptance by making a small space in the linen cupboard for his socks.

Best of all, he took me to the stockyard scrap lot - WOW. An acre of amazing old mining and trucking equipment that's been accumulating over the years - and we can help ourselves! Huge giant vent things which would make fabulous industrial art sculptures - Gary can get them craned over to my place! James K, you would go NUTS over the scrap yard (yes will post photos, you will be sooooo jealous). We'll be able to make a fantastic shed/workshop in my back yard with the stuff out there, it will look like something out of Mad Max Thunderdome.

It's COLD (25 degrees). We had to put JACKETS on. We'll have to sleep with a blanket for the first time in weeks - I wonder where I put them?
