What's That Wet Stuff Coming Out Of The Sky?

7:30 am and it's a freezing 20 degrees - sometime last night a rain front moved in, I woke up wondering what the strange noise was. Turned off the air conditioning for the first time in days. We've only had a tiny sprinkle but it's such a relief. Will floods be next? They've had floods and bushfires down Yalgoo way; we can see the smoke and the glow of the flames on the horizon. Noel, the owner and driver for Murchison Freight, brought my latest Bunnings delivery round and said there were 60 FESA volunteers (fire & rescue) parked outside the pub at Yalgoo. We are down to about 2 trained firies here in Meeka plus a couple of newbies like me, so we can't leave town or go out of phone range.

I need to go through the food supplies and check what we've got as backup - if it floods, we can be cut off for days, or even weeks. The road train pull-over at the roadhouse will fill up with trapped truckers and the town will run out of beer (disaster!). But we have enough pets now to last us a couple of weeks if we run out of frozen steaks.

At least we know how to make our own fun here in Meeka - our latest entertainment activity is sitting on the verandah in companionable silence watching the chickens. There's something homely and relaxing about chooks wandering in the yard. Gary made a little lean-to for them with a couple of old doors; when they go to sleep, they all bunch up together under Big Hen, making little chook noises to themselves.

If we were in the city we could go to the movies, coffee shops, malls and art galleries. I'd rather sit out here on the verandah with Gary, drinking Mexican beer and watching the sky slowly change, listening to chickens and rain.
